We asked Dr. Aylin Bilgutay!
- What do patients say about you?
That’s probably a better question for my patients than for me! I certainly hope they would say that I am a caring, knowledgeable, and skilled physician. I truly love my patients, and I believe that shows.
- What is the #1 tip you always share with patient families?
I like to share that many bothersome urinary symptoms that patients experience can be managed, and sometimes even resolved, through appropriate behavioral modifications. My top recommendation is to work on both healthy bowel and bladder habits simultaneously, as this holistic approach provides the best symptomatic control. It is essential to understand that you cannot optimize bladder health and function without also addressing bowel habits, including any underlying stool retention, because the two systems are closely interrelated.
My detailed recommendations for managing bowel and bladder habits include ensuring adequate hydration, consuming enough dietary fiber, practicing timed and double voiding every 2-3 hours during the day while awake, and addressing any underlying stool burden with an over-the-counter bowel regimen when necessary. These recommendations can be tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient based on their clinical response.
- How do you spend time with your friends and family for fun?
I love spending time at home with my family and our menagerie of pets. We like to read together as a family. My daughter, Emi, is currently in first grade. She has started reading books out loud to us, which is so exciting! We also love music. We all play instruments, and there is always music in the house, from singing to piano to drums.
- What do you enjoy most about New Jersey?
I love that it allows me to live close to my family! That is huge for me. My husband and I are both originally from around this area, and my husband wanted to be closer to home after traveling around the country with me for residency and fellowship training. So now we feel truly at home! My mom lives basically across the street. She is a very involved “grammy” and helps out all the time with my daughter. My in-laws are also not too far away, in the Philly suburbs, and so “mom-mom and pop-pop” are extremely involved with my daughter as well. This has really worked out well for us as a family. I also enjoy the relative proximity to major metropolitan areas, including both NYC and Philly, without having to live directly in a large city. NJ has so much to offer!
