Meet Katie Virgilio! A Monmouth County native, Katie is a mom of one and the owner of Shrewsbury Gymnastics. Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?
I grew up in Hazlet and then ended up buying a home there with my husband, so we haven’t gone far!
Child(ren) and Age(s)?
I have one son, Del, and he is 8 years old
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
People that don’t know me very well may be surprised to know that I have a huge musical side to me! I’ve always loved to sing and I play the ukulele, and I was very involved in musical theater as a kid. It really translates when I put together floor routines for my gymnasts – all my girls know how invested in the music choices I am!
Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?
Probably my husband – I hear so many women complaining that they have to do it all and they don’t get any help from their partner, but our relationship could not be farther from that. From day one in the hospital when my son was born it was just him and me, no other family or friends. And that’s how we’ve handled life ever since. I am so grateful to have him by my side.
Favorite things to do with your kids?
We do a lot together since it’s just the three of us! We all workout at a local gym together (Relentless Training in Hazlet); we love to hike together with our dog at Hartshorne or Cheesequake; probably our absolute favorite pastime though is snuggling on the couch watching a movie. I want to soak in all those moments before he’s too old and won’t want to anymore!
Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!
Right now, I’m not formally involved in any organizations, but I hope to be in the future! At the moment, I am mostly working on expanding my business (Shrewsbury gymnastics) to include a toddler drop off program that will expand on functional movement for little ones and be a place that kids can call home without having to commit to traditional pre-school.
How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
I’ve had a ton of support from family and friends and have surrounded myself with a great crew that has truly encouraged me along this journey!
What is your favorite restaurant in Monmouth County?
Tough question! For casual dining we love Half Moon in Keansburg and I probably order from the Salad House about 3 times per week! But for something a little more interesting maybe B2 in Red Bank, or Drew’s Bayshore Bistro in Keyport.
What is your favorite activity to do with your child(ren) in Monmouth County?
My son is very into golf so going to the Golf Den in Red Bank is a blast! We also love to ride our bikes down the Henry Hudson trail.
What are your Mom Goals?
To make sure my son, and my family as a whole is living the happiest, healthiest life we can. I could go on forever about this topic but everything I do in my life from career, to personal hobbies and habits, to family all comes down to the pursuit of happiness.
