Speech Start is a mother-daughter owned and operated private practice that helps your child develop their superpower by offering cutting edge speech, language, academic and feeding evaluation and treatment. We believe in individualized approaches and continuity of care between home and school. Speech Start provides children with a safe, supportive and compassionate environment where they can learn and apply the fundamentals of speech and language skills efficiently. Our experienced clinicians create opportunities for children to cultivate natural language and other developmental and social skills. Owned and operated by Dr. Bernadette Mullen, CCC-SLPD/SLS and Shaylyn Stilwell, M.S. Ed., CCC-SLP/SLS, Speech Start is dedicated to helping your child develop their superpower. Dr. Bernadette Mullen is a New Jersey licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and Special Education Teacher. Dr. Mullen graduated from Kean University in Union, NJ with masters and doctoral degrees in Speech-Language Pathology. She has owned and operated Speech Start LLC for 22 years. She specializes in providing evaluations and therapeutic intervention to children and teens with both speech and language disorders. Dr. Mullen has also dedicated years of experience and research to help children develop social skills necessary to ensure career success, navigate peer relationships, and better understand themselves and their emotions. She is currently in pursuit of the Sensory Certificate for Speech-Language Pathologists with the hope that this will allow for her to better treat her clients with sensory challenges and to better lead her Speech Start team!
Shaylyn Stilwell, M.S. Ed., CCC-SLP/SLS graduated from Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ with a Master’s of Science in Education in Speech-Language Pathology. She has worked with diverse pediatric populations, with specific experience in the areas of cleft lip and palate, chromosomal abnormalities, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is currently completing her PROMPT Level 4 certification and has extensive experience evaluating and treating children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Shaylyn also offers evaluation and treatment for children and teens who require support via augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Both Dr. Mullen and Shaylyn strive to provide the most positive work environment for their team and clients alike!
Speech Start offers comprehensive evaluations as well as individual and group therapies and services for children with diagnoses including but not limited to: childhood apraxia of speech, autism spectrum disorders, and language disorders as well as articulation and phonological disorders. Our therapists and clinicians also provide services related to academic tutoring (Language Arts pre-K – 12, Mathematics through grade 8), behavioral feeding, voice and fluency disorders. Speech Start prides themselves on the variety of social skills programs that are offered, ranging from toddler groups to adults. The social skills curriculum utilizes the SEL framework and takes an academic approach with a functional lens. In addition, we work to help our young adults enter the workforce and transition from student to adult. Please check out the various social skills groups that we offer across all ages!
The Speech Start team constantly strives to learn more and develop their clinical skills! Speech Start clinicians have completed training and certification courses including: PROMPT, DTTC, AAC, Sensory Integration, SOS Feeding and more!
