Ranney’s expert and caring Early Childhood (age 3 to Pre-Kindergarten) faculty guide their youngest learners to form foundational skills leveraging Reggio Emilia, a developmental theory that encourages learning through exploration and creation. Our teachers are specialists in Early Childhood Education and our classrooms intentionally support the learning process. The classroom starts in September with a blank canvas and evolves through the year as children take responsibility and demonstrate new knowledge. As a result, each classroom becomes a unique reflection of a particular class of students. Class spaces are in a constant state of growth and change; change that can be impacted by students’ own contributions.
Early Childhood classes are kept small, with low student-teacher ratios so that students can receive nurturing, individualized attention. Students have the opportunity to visit the Searle Library, the Lower School music studio, world language classrooms, and the community garden. Specialized classes such as science, health and art are integrated within the homeroom setting. Early childhood students have the opportunity to build relationships with multiple “specials” teachers as they progress through their Lower School experience. Athletic facilities extend beyond the gymnasium and field spaces to include an indoor heated pool and outdoor play structures designed with a variety of age-appropriate physical challenges.
Ranney’s nurturing learning environment encourages children to build confidence, discover their talents, and love learning in Early Childhood, which extends into Lower School (Kindergarten through fifth grade), Middle School (sixth through eighth grade), and Upper School (9th through 12th grade.)

Established in 1998, Freehold Montessori the principles of education developed from the research of Dr. Maria Montessori. The school is an affiliate of the American Montessori Society. We have teachers and teacher’s aides whom have been with the preschool for numerous years, including our resident primary teacher whom has been with us for over 20 years!
Our mission at Freehold Montessori is to be able to deliver a complete Montessori program by providing a diverse educational community that is built on the Montessori philosophy that fosters curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking for its students. Additionally, we consider the emotional, intellectual, physical, and social development of the total child by addressing the uniqueness of each child in a nurturing, emotionally secure and academically excellent environment. At Freehold Montessori, teachers follow students’ individual needs to achieve personal academic excellence and to become life-long learners who respect themselves, others and their environment. Our program is based on children’s developmental needs and creates freedom within limits through a carefully prepared environment. The environment allows exposure to materials and experiences that develop intelligence as well as physical and psychological abilities. Montessori materials are self-correcting, interesting to children and developmentally appropriate. The prepared environment is central to the implementation of the Montessori Curriculum. A great deal of time and care went into preparing the classroom environment. The child’s work within this “‘prepared environment” consists mainly of using the materials especially designed by Maria Montessori.
Freehold Montessori Preschool is located on three beautiful acres of wooded land in Freehold, New Jersey. Our quaint buildings and wonderful shaded play areas were intelligently and thoughtfully designed to enhance the education experiences for both teachers and children.
