Our Meet-A-Mom this week is the creative and kindhearted Robyn Schindler, MA, MS, LCAT, ATR-BC, LPC, NCC. Robyn is a mom of two and owns Paint The Stars Art Therapy located in Manalapan and serving Monmouth, Ocean, Mercer, and Middlesex counties. Her business is all about helping children cope by using unique creative approaches, putting the screens down, and picking up the paint brush. Originally from NY Robyn is putting her families roots here down in NJ and loving it! Read her interview below.

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?

I am originally from New York, born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens and Long Island. My husband and I moved to Manalapan in 2011 so we still consider ourselves newbie New Jersians.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

I have two AMAZING boys; Daniel, age 5 and Sam, age 2.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

Hmmm, I know the words to every song, tons of music trivia and I sing super loud (and tone deaf) just about everywhere I go. This may or may not include Broadway musicals.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

Wow! My whole damn village! Definitely my family, my mom and my in-laws have saved me/us several times during this crazy ride called parenthood. But I’d also really need to thank my babysitters! I would not be able to be a working mom at all without their help, they are amazing and I am grateful and super thankful for them.

Favorite things to do with your kids?

Art! We get messy and we get creative! From when they were just a few months old I began doing art with them and I have yet to stop. We paint with our bodies, create with found objects and generally have the best time ever. I also LOVE taking the boys to the beach. This also started right after they were born in the hopes that I would convert them to be beach bums like their mama, and it worked! And dancing! we dance throughout the day, to all sorts of music…a sign in my kitchen reads “this kitchen is for dancing” and that is the full TRUTH!

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

I am currently in the process of publishing children’s books that I have written and illustrated. I’ve also just hired two new team members to join me in my practice and we have our eyes set on opening a possible third location soon! (gulp!)

Paint The Stars Art Therapy unique and creative approaches to psychotherapy allow families to receive the highest level of care for their children and young adults. PTSAT was created to help all children reach the stars! Read more at the bottom of the page.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

This community, in general, has been so very welcoming not only of my practice and the therapies we are offering but also of my family. My kids love going into local shops and stores and restaurants where owners and managers know them by name. We love taking the time to get to know other businesses in the area. Our Paint the Stars Art Therapy roster is typically always full and that is a blessing from this community. To know that parents trust us with their most precious gifts is just incredible. We never have no-shows, we stay busy and we love being busy helping the community to get healthy and stay healthy. This community has created our reputation and we would be nowhere without them and their support.

What is your favorite restaurant in Monmouth County?

Ahhh tough! Anemos in Manalapan is my constant go-to! Tommy’s Tavern and The Beach Tavern are really high on the list as well.

What is your favorite activity to do with your child(ren) in Monmouth County?

Monmouth is amazing for its Beaches and parks! I think we have been to every park in this county, we are at the beach constantly and when we aren’t doing that we take advantage of mini-golf and splash parks, trails for hikes, we adore being outside in case you couldn’t tell.

What are your Mom Goals?

To raise nice and respectful humans. I don’t need my kids to be the smartest or the fastest or the very best at everything life has to offer but I definitely need them to be kind. I want them to know that what they do and the things they say, decisions they make will not only impact others and the planet but it will show who they are. I’d also like to keep my sanity while accomplishing this.
