Meet-A-Mom Bethany Selage | The Monmouth Moms

Meet this week’s mom Bethany Selage a new mom, business owner, and kick-boxer. Originally from England, Bethany has been living in Monmouth County for 22 years! When she isn’t busy taking care of her beautiful daughter Charlotte you can find her kickboxing at 9Round in Colts Neck where she helps manage and teach!

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Monmouth County?

I was born and raised in 35 miles southwest of London in Surrey, England until I was nine. My parents, my sister, and I moved to the US 22 years ago and, after spending a week in New York City, we moved to Holmdel. Barring a 2 year stint in Orlando, I’ve lived in Monmouth County ever since.

Child and Age?

My husband Joey and I have one child. Her name is Charlotte and she is nearly 5 months old.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you….

I have a vocal performance degree and used to sing opera…that’s pretty far removed from the fitness world, but that’s what I wanted to be when I grew up… and after I found out that both Formula 1 racing drivers and horse jockey are really short.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

My parents. I know everyone probably says that, but it’s true. Especially my Mum. Being a first time mum is probably one of the scariest things ever, but also one of the best. Having a strong relationship with your other half, as well as a strong support system allows you to see how wonderful it truly is – and get through the “witching hour” because, whoa man, that can be tough.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

This community is a great support system for small businesses. Despite having over 600 locations all over the country, 9Round is not well known in Monmouth County. This community is always up for trying something new and that has really benefited my business. Monmouth County has a great Mum-network and the mums at my gym have been my biggest advocates. They bring their friends in and it spirals from there.

What is your favorite restaurant in Monmouth County?

Aarzu in Freehold. It’s by far the best Indian restaurant I’ve found here. I’m also always looking for new places to go, so send me your favorites so I can plan date nights for the next couple of months!

What is your favorite activity to do with your child in Monmouth County?

Charlotte is a bit too small to go on big adventures at the moment, but we love to take the dogs on walks to Bucks Mill Park or Bayonet Farm. She gets put in the baby carrier and away we go!

What are you Mom Goals?

I would like to raise a kind, understanding, and intelligent young lady. I would like her to be independent and know her own mind and not be afraid to speak it. At the end of the day, as long as she is happy and healthy, then I think I’m doing alright.

What is some advice you could give to Moms who are trying to develop a workout routine?

Mums, it’s going to be hard, but you don’t have to commit to 2 hours in the gym everyday. Start slow and try a bunch of different things to see what you like and what works with your lifestyle. My daughter is only little, so a half hour workout is right up my alley. It gives me enough time to get in, sweat it up, and get out, and (hopefully) shower all before she wakes up from her nap.

Everyone says make sure to take care of yourself as well as your kiddos, and I agree. Your little ones deserve the best version of you.

Anything additional you want to add:

Shameless plug. 9Round works for mums. Family life can be stressful. Punching and kicking things relieve stress. I have a place where it is socially acceptable to punch and kick things. 🙂 In all seriousness, a 9Round workout is a great stress reliever as well as an awesome workout. It’s half an hour and there are no class times to worry about – show up when you have 30 minutes and you’ll leave smiling and sweating.
